What causes the hard, black "alligatored" surface found on some antiques and old furniture?
Years of waxes, cooking vapors and old varnishes can build up into a hard, crusty finish. In fact, most of the original finish on good quality antiques may still be intact underneath. BLACK WAX will cut through these layers leaving a smooth polished finish.
Why is BLACK WAX preferable to stripping and refinishing?
Stripping and refinishing is a method of removing the dirt from your furniture, but is time consuming and entails the use of harsh chemicals or solvents. BLACK WAX can often save the work and cost of stripping and refinishing and is safe and easy to use. BLACK WAX will uncover the original patina of your valuable pieces.
My furniture has a very thick build-up. How do I “speed up” the cleaning process? Also, how do I get into crevices and carvings?
Try applying BLACK WAX with a piece of 0000 steel wool. Rub in the direction of the grain, a small section at a time. You can use an old toothbrush to work BLACK WAX into the crevices of your furniture.
Can BLACK WAX harm my furniture?
No. BLACK WAX is a blend of high quality carnauba waxes and a fine, natural abrasive. It has been used by museums and antique collectors for over 25 years. It may be used with confidence on any wood finish that suffers from built up dirt and needs smoothing and polishing. You control the results.
I’ve cleaned my piece with BLACK WAX and am delighted with the results. How do I preserve my finish?
We manufacture CRYSTAL WAX and SIENNA WAX for your regular polishing needs. CRYSTAL WAX clear carnauba paste wax for light colored furniture. SIENNA WAX
combines carnauba paste wax with a brown pigment to prevent the “chalky” effect sometimes left in cracks and carvings by wax residue.
